Food Thermometer Battery Sizes and Replacement Guide

There is no universal thermometer battery. Read the code on the existing cell or use the exact model manual before buying a replacement.

A food thermometer battery can be a coin cell, a standard cylindrical cell or an internal rechargeable pack; the correct answer depends on the exact model. Before opening the compartment, record the model code and consult its instructions. Similar-looking Salter, OXO and Polder thermometers do not necessarily share a battery size.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What battery does a food thermometer use?

There is no single size. Check the marking on the installed battery and confirm it against the manual for the exact thermometer model.

How do I change a Salter meat thermometer battery?

Find the precise Salter model and follow its illustrated instructions, noting polarity and cover position. Do not force an orange cap or battery door that does not release as shown.

Why is my thermometer blank after a new battery?

Recheck polarity, remove any insulating tab and inspect the contacts for dirt or corrosion. If the compartment was wet, follow the manufacturer’s support advice before powering it again.

Can I substitute a similar coin-cell number?

Do not assume that a cell of similar diameter is interchangeable. Thickness, chemistry and voltage must match the specified battery.
