Dishwasher-Safe Meat Thermometers: What the Label Means

Do not put a thermometer in the dishwasher unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that exact part and model. Waterproof, water-resistant and dishwasher-safe are different claims.

A dishwasher-safe meat thermometer must have explicit manufacturer instructions permitting the dishwasher for the exact component you plan to wash. An IP rating or the word waterproof does not automatically cover hot wash cycles, detergent, steam or heated drying.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can you put a meat thermometer in the dishwasher?

Only when the manual for that exact model and component says you can. Otherwise hand-clean the food-contact probe and protect the electronics.

Does waterproof mean dishwasher safe?

No. A water-ingress rating is defined under particular test conditions and does not necessarily cover detergent, spray pressure, heat or drying cycles.

How should I clean a digital meat thermometer?

Clean and sanitize the probe according to the manufacturer, wipe the body as directed and avoid soaking connectors or battery compartments unless expressly allowed.

Are wireless meat probes dishwasher safe?

Some makers permit it for specific probes and others require hand washing. Check the current manual because visually similar wireless models can have different seals and limits.

Can a thermometer be used after water gets inside?

Remove it from service if readings, the display or the battery area behave abnormally. Consult the manufacturer rather than using a potentially compromised food-safety instrument.
