Car Camera Alarms: Recording, Alerts and Limits

A dash cam can save footage after motion or impact, and some connected models can notify you. It is evidence equipment, not a substitute for a vehicle alarm.

A car camera alarm usually describes a dash cam that reacts to movement or impact while the vehicle is parked. Basic parking mode may simply protect an event clip on the memory card. A connected camera can add a notification or remote view when its data connection and service are active.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a dash cam alert my phone if someone hits my car?

Some connected dash cams offer impact notifications when parking mode, connectivity and the relevant service are active. A local Wi-Fi-only model usually cannot alert you when you are away.

Is a car camera alarm the same as a vehicle alarm?

No. A dash cam is primarily designed to record evidence. A vehicle alarm is designed to detect intrusion or disturbance and may sound a siren or integrate with the car's security system.

Will a car camera record before an impact?

A parking mode with buffered event recording can retain a short period from before the trigger. Power-saving modes may wake only after impact, so check the maker's description carefully.

Does a camera alarm work when the car is off?

Only when the camera has a suitable constant-power source and parking mode is configured. Battery protection or a dedicated dash-cam battery can limit the risk of draining the vehicle battery.
