CarPlay with a Dashcam: Displays, Cameras and Setup

A combined unit can add CarPlay and road recording without replacing the factory stereo. Check whether the camera, audio route and reverse-camera input suit your car.

CarPlay with dashcam products combine an Apple CarPlay display and a recording camera, usually in a screen that mounts above the dashboard. They suit older vehicles where replacing the head unit is awkward, but wireless CarPlay does not mean the whole installation is wireless: the display still needs power, and a rear camera needs a cable.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can you get Apple CarPlay with a dash cam?

Yes. Portable displays are sold with a forward-facing recorder, and some accept a rear camera. CarPlay handles phone projection while the camera records separately to local storage.

Does wireless CarPlay mean no cables?

No. The phone link may be wireless, but the screen needs power. A rear camera normally requires power and a video cable routed through the vehicle.

Will a CarPlay dashcam work with my factory stereo?

Often, because portable units can output audio by Bluetooth, FM or auxiliary connection. Confirm the audio method your car supports before buying.

Is a combined CarPlay dashcam better than a separate dash cam?

It is tidier for adding navigation and recording together. A dedicated dash cam can offer a smaller windscreen footprint, stronger parking features and more camera choices.
