CCTV Car Cameras: Local Recording or Remote Monitoring?

Most dash cams are local recorders, not full CCTV systems. Remote live view needs a compatible cloud camera, an internet connection and continuous protected power.

A CCTV car camera can mean two different products: a dash cam that records locally while parked, or a connected system that can send alerts and video remotely. Most ordinary dash cams save to microSD and cannot be viewed from anywhere just because they have Wi-Fi.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can I use a dash cam as CCTV for my car?

A parking-mode dash cam can provide local surveillance of its camera views. Remote CCTV-like access requires a supported cloud or LTE connection and suitable parked power.

Can I watch my car camera remotely?

Only on models with remote-view capability and an active internet path. Local Wi-Fi generally works only when you are near the camera.

Does car CCTV work when the engine is off?

It can if parking mode is supported and a hardwire kit or approved battery supplies power. Voltage and timer cut-offs may end recording.

Is it legal to record inside a car in Australia?

Rules vary by state, context and whether audio is captured. Inform drivers or passengers where required and obtain current legal advice for commercial, rideshare or workplace use.
