Clean versus replace

A reusable pre-filter may be washable or vacuumable. The main particle and carbon stages are usually replacement parts. Read the manual for the exact filter code before cleaning anything.

Washable pre-filters

Remove loose hair and dust at the interval in the manual. If washing is allowed, let the pre-filter dry completely before reinstalling it. Never run the purifier with wet filter material.

How often to change the main filter

Intervals are estimates because loading depends on fan time and pollution. Current manufacturer guidance in our evidence set ranges from about six months for Blueair Blue Pure 511, 6–8 months for Levoit Core 300S, 8–12 months for Vital 100S and 12 months for Philips AC0820/10 and WINIX Filter O.

Signs to check the filter

Follow the indicator and manual. Also check for visibly heavy loading, persistent odour, reduced airflow or an interval that has expired. Reset an indicator only after completing the maintenance it represents.

Estimate yearly filter cost

Divide 12 by the replacement interval in months, then multiply by the current filter price. A six-month interval means about two filters a year; a 12-month interval means one. Retail prices change, so date the price.

Questions before you buy

Can I wash an air purifier filter?

Only if the manufacturer describes that exact part as washable. Main HEPA and carbon filters are commonly replacement parts.

Can I vacuum a HEPA filter?

Do not vacuum it unless the manual says to. Vacuuming can damage or disturb the media and does not restore used carbon.

How often should I change the filter?

Use the interval for the exact model and adjust only according to the manual, operating time and filter indicator.

Why does my filter light stay on?

Many models need the indicator reset after replacement. Follow the model’s reset steps rather than assuming the new filter is faulty.
