Do Air Purifiers Help with Allergies?
A correctly sized particle-filter purifier can reduce some airborne pollen, dust-mite debris and pet dander. It cannot guarantee symptom relief or replace source control and medical advice.

01
What the evidence supports
The EPA says studies of portable HEPA cleaners have sometimes found improvements in one or more allergy or asthma symptoms, but results are not consistent across every symptom. That is a reason to compare filtration and airflow carefully, not to promise a health outcome.
02
Pollen
Keep windows closed when outdoor pollen is high if that is appropriate for your home, reduce tracked-in pollen and use a purifier sized for the room. Compare pollen CADR where it is published.
03
Dust mites
A purifier can only capture debris that becomes airborne. It does not remove mites or allergen already in bedding and carpets, so cleaning and humidity management remain separate tasks.
04
Pet dander
Dander can remain airborne, while pet hair usually settles quickly. A washable or accessible pre-filter helps with larger debris; particle filtration and CADR matter for smaller airborne material. No household purifier can make a pet allergy-safe room.
05
Purifier or humidifier?
A purifier filters some airborne particles. A humidifier adds moisture and may be unsuitable if humidity is already high. Measure the room and address damp before adding moisture.
06
Should it run at night?
Longer run time filters more air, but use a speed that still provides useful airflow. For bedrooms, compare sleep-mode dB, lights and the CADR or room-size basis, then position the unit without blocking airflow.
Common questions
Questions before you buy
Do air purifiers help with pollen allergies?
They can reduce some airborne pollen when the filter and airflow suit the room, but the product cannot guarantee symptom relief.
Do air purifiers help with dust-mite allergies?
They may capture debris that becomes airborne. They do not remove mites or settled allergen from bedding, carpets or upholstery.
Do air purifiers help with pet dander?
A suitable particle filter can capture some airborne dander. It cannot remove the source or make a room safe for everyone with an allergy.
Should I sleep next to an air purifier?
Follow the placement instructions and avoid directing uncomfortable airflow at the bed. Check sleep noise, light control and room sizing.
Compare five air purifiers by manufacturer-published room coverage, particle filtration details and noise. Philips AC0820/10 is a compact-room starting point; no product here promises allergy relief.
Levoit Vital 100S is the only model in this evidence set with a washable pre-filter stated on its UK product page. Compare it with four alternatives using published room and airflow figures, while keeping expectations about pet hair, dander and odours realistic.
Philips AC0820/10 leads with a 19 dB(A) sleep mode in manufacturer data. Levoit, Blueair and Winix cover other bedroom needs, from small rooms to larger spaces.
