Digital Oven and Meat Thermometers for Roasting

For roasting, use an oven-safe food probe with the display outside; add a separate air probe if you also need to check the oven itself.

A digital oven and meat thermometer can monitor food while the door stays closed. In a typical wired design, the metal probe and heat-rated lead go inside while the display remains outside. A dual-channel model can also use an air probe to show the cooking environment.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a digital meat thermometer go in the oven?

Only a model designed for leave-in use can. On wired units, the probe and cable may be oven-safe while the digital display must stay outside.

Does an oven thermometer measure food temperature?

An ambient oven probe measures air; a penetration probe measures inside food. Some instruments accept either or both, but the probes are not interchangeable unless stated.

Where should an oven air probe be placed?

Clip it near the centre of the cooking area without touching the wall, rack or food, following the manufacturer's spacing guidance.

Can an oven door damage a thermometer cable?

A suitable heat-rated cable is designed to pass through a closed door, but sharp edges, tight seals and direct contact with elements can damage it. Use the routing in the manual.
