Back View Car Cameras for Reversing and Recording

Choose by purpose first: a reversing camera helps with manoeuvres, while a rear dash camera saves evidence. Some systems do both, but many do not.

A back view car camera can mean a reversing aid, a rear-facing dash cam or a digital rear-view mirror. They solve different problems. Reversing systems prioritise a live, low-delay picture near the bumper; rear dash cameras prioritise recorded detail behind the car; mirror systems provide a continuous display.

Questions before you buy

What is the difference between a rear dash cam and a reversing camera?

A rear dash cam records journeys and incidents. A reversing camera provides a live view for manoeuvring and may not save footage.

Can one back view car camera do both jobs?

Some systems can display a live rear feed and record it, but this must be stated explicitly. Check startup delay, reverse triggering and recording resolution.

Is an inside or outside rear camera better?

Inside mounting protects the camera and simplifies weather sealing. Outside mounting can give a lower bumper-level view but demands proper waterproofing and cable routing.

Will tinted rear glass affect the camera?

Yes, tint can reduce light reaching an internally mounted camera, especially at night. Heating lines and steep glass can also affect the view.

Do wireless back view cameras need power?

Most still require power at the rear even if the video signal is wireless. Confirm the power source and reverse-gear trigger before installation.
