Google Map Car Camera: Street View, Navigation or Dashcam?

Google Maps does not turn an ordinary phone into a continuous road dash cam. Street View imagery, navigation and a GPS-enabled dash cam are three different tools.

A Google Map car camera search can point to the vehicles that collect Street View, a dashcam Google Maps can help locate, or a camera that displays a driven route. These are not equivalent. Google publishes Street View imagery for map exploration; it is not a personal incident-recording service.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can Google Maps work as a dash cam?

Google Maps provides mapping and navigation, not continuous incident recording. Use dedicated dash-cam hardware if you need loop recording and protected clips.

What cameras do Google Street View cars use?

Google uses specialised panoramic capture systems for Street View. The equipment and publication process are different from a consumer dash cam.

Can a dash cam show its route on a map?

A GPS-equipped model may log coordinates that compatible software plots on a map. Verify the software, export format and ongoing support before buying.

Can I upload dashcam footage to Google Maps?

Google Maps accepts certain user contributions under its current policies, but ordinary dashcam video is not automatically converted into Street View. Follow Google's contribution and privacy rules.
