Evaporative Air Cooler: How It Works in a Room

A fan draws air across a wet pad; water evaporates and absorbs heat from the passing air. The process adds moisture and works best where humidity is low and air can escape.

An evaporative air cooler works by moving air over water held in a wet filter or pad. As some of that water evaporates, it takes heat from the pad and passing air, so the outgoing air can feel cooler. Unlike a compressor-based air conditioner, the process does not extract heat through a refrigerant cycle.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

How does a portable air cooler work?

An evaporative portable cooler pulls air across a water-wetted pad. Evaporation absorbs heat from the airflow, but the unit also adds moisture and needs ventilation to avoid recirculating increasingly humid air.

Does an evaporative air cooler need an open window?

It generally needs ventilation so humid indoor air can escape. Australian Government guidance notes that portable evaporative coolers may lose effectiveness if they recirculate indoor air without airflow outside.

Does an evaporative air cooler work in humid weather?

It is less effective when humidity is high because the air has less capacity to take up more water vapour. The Australian Government says evaporative cooling works well in low-humidity inland regions.

How is an air cooler different from an air conditioner?

An evaporative cooler uses water evaporation, while an air conditioner transfers heat through a refrigeration cycle. Portable air conditioners also need an exhaust duct through an open window.
