Evaporative Air Cooler: How It Works and What to Expect

An evaporative air cooler draws air through a damp medium, where some water evaporates and carries heat away. Its effect depends on the air and room conditions, so it does not work like a refrigerant air conditioner.

An evaporative air cooler works by moving air across water or a damp cooling pad. As some of that water evaporates, it takes heat from the passing air; a fan then circulates the air into the room. A portable air cooler uses the same basic process, with the water reservoir and fan housed in a movable unit.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

How does an evaporative air cooler work?

A fan pulls air through a wet pad or other damp medium. Some water evaporates into the airflow, absorbing heat, and the fan distributes that cooler, more humid air.

How does a portable air cooler work?

A portable air cooler contains a fan and a water reservoir, often with a cooling pad. It passes room air over the damp surface and blows the resulting airflow back into the space.

Does an evaporative cooler cool a whole room?

It can affect the comfort of a space, but results depend on room size, airflow, humidity and ventilation. These units do not operate like air conditioners that recirculate air through a refrigerant cooling cycle.

Should a window be open when using an evaporative cooler?

Some fresh-air exchange helps prevent moisture from building up indoors. Follow the unit's instructions and provide suitable ventilation for the room.

Is an air cooler the same as an air conditioner?

No. An evaporative air cooler uses water evaporation and adds moisture to its airflow; an air conditioner uses a refrigeration system to transfer heat out of the space.
