Using a WiFi Extender with an Ethernet Cable

An Ethernet cable may connect a device to an extender or link an extender to the router in access point mode; check model documentation.

A wifi extender using ethernet cable has two common use cases: connecting a wired device near the extender, or feeding the extender from the router for access point operation. Those modes are not interchangeable, so check the exact product specification and port role before you run a cable. TP-Link lists access point mode and Gigabit Ethernet on RE705X and RE605X. If you need to reach a television or desktop, verify that the selected port supports the intended connection and that the cable route is practical. Compare the brand pages and best list once you know which mode you need.

Questions before you buy

Can I connect a Wi-Fi extender to my router with Ethernet?

Some extenders support wired access point mode. Check the manual for the port and setup method.

Can I connect a TV to an extender with Ethernet?

Yes, if the extender has an Ethernet port and supports wired client connections.

Does Ethernet make an extender faster?

A wired backhaul can avoid a wireless link between router and extender, but results depend on the router, cable, device and service.

Can an Ethernet cable power a Wi-Fi extender?

Only if the model explicitly supports PoE input. Do not assume a standard Ethernet port supplies power.
