WiFi Wall Plug Extenders for a Weak-Signal Room

A wall plug WiFi extender is a compact repeater that relays your router's signal. For a distant room where wireless backhaul is unreliable, compare a powerline kit with WiFi at the remote adapter.

A WiFi wall plug extender gives you a small device that plugs directly into a mains outlet and repeats the existing wireless network. TP-Link RE220 is one example: the manufacturer lists dual-band AC750 networking, access-point mode and a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port. It is intended for indoor use.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What is a WiFi extender that plugs into the wall?

It is a compact range extender powered from a mains socket. It receives your router's WiFi and rebroadcasts it to nearby devices; it needs a usable signal where it is installed.

Is a plug-in WiFi booster the same as a powerline adapter?

No. A plug-in repeater uses wireless backhaul. A powerline kit sends network traffic between paired adapters over electrical wiring, and some kits provide WiFi from the far-end adapter.

Where should I plug in a wall WiFi extender?

Choose an outlet between the router and the weak-signal area where the extender still receives a strong connection. Avoid hiding it behind furniture or placing it where walls block the router signal.

Does a WiFi wall plug extender need Ethernet?

Not for ordinary wireless repeating. An Ethernet port can provide a wired connection to a device or, on some models, support access-point mode through a network cable.
