Does a Dashcam Record When the Car Is Switched Off?
Sometimes. Recording after switch-off requires a parking mode and a suitable power source; a camera plugged into an ignition-switched socket normally loses power.

01
Check whether the socket stays live
Switch the engine off and lock the car, then see whether the camera shuts down after the vehicle's normal delay. Many accessory sockets are ignition-switched, so a plugged-in dashcam cannot record once their supply ends.
02
Identify the camera's parking mode
Parking modes are not all continuous. A camera may wait in low-power standby and wake after an impact, buffer video around motion, or record at a reduced frame rate. Read the model manual to learn what is actually captured.
03
Choose a suitable parked-power method
A manufacturer-approved hardwire kit can connect the camera to an appropriate fuse and may include low-voltage protection. Some systems instead use a dedicated external battery. Installation must suit the vehicle and camera.
04
Set battery protection conservatively
Parking recording draws energy after the engine stops. Use the cut-off controls specified by the maker and consider professional fitting, especially when the vehicle has complex power management or is used infrequently.
05
Confirm that parked clips are being saved
After installation, reproduce the maker's safe test procedure and inspect the files. A parking icon alone does not prove that the desired event, camera view and time period were recorded.
06
Keep the windscreen installation lawful
Place the unit where it does not materially obstruct the driver's view. Route cables securely and do not interfere with airbags, controls or the swept area required for safe visibility.
Common questions
Questions before you buy
Does a dashcam record when the car is off?
Only if the camera has a supported parking mode and continues to receive suitable power. An ignition-switched socket generally stops supplying it.
Will parking mode drain the car battery?
It consumes power, so a badly configured or unsuitable installation can discharge the battery. Use compatible low-voltage protection and the maker's settings.
Do dashcams record all night?
Some can, but many record only after an impact or detected motion, or use time-lapse. Runtime depends on the mode, power supply and protection limits.
Can a dashcam work from its internal battery while parked?
Small internal batteries are commonly intended for shutdown or short events, not dependable overnight recording. Follow the model's parking-power instructions.
Does parking mode work without hardwiring?
That depends on the camera and whether another approved supply remains available. Do not assume an always-live socket provides battery protection.
The Nextbase 622GW is our balanced UK pick for its detailed recording, stabilisation and accessible touchscreen. Garmin Mini 3 suits a discreet fit, while VIOFO A329S covers the front and rear at high resolution.
A dual-camera kit is the direct choice when you want the road ahead and traffic behind in the same recording system. Check rear resolution and cable length, not just the headline front-camera specification.
The 622GW has the strongest recording specification in this trio; the 522GW keeps the large touchscreen and polarising filter at 2K, while the 322GW covers the essentials.
Start with the coverage you need: a discreet front camera for the road ahead, or a front-and-rear system for evidence from both directions. Our guides then narrow the choice by installation, connectivity and brand.
