Police Car Camera Speeding Evidence in the UK

Police vehicles can support speed enforcement using approved equipment, but a visible camera alone does not prove that your speed was measured. The notice and evidence type determine what happens next.

A police car camera speeding encounter can involve more than ordinary video. Police may use Home Office type-approved speed-measuring equipment, while in-car footage can also help document driving behaviour and surrounding events. A camera fitted to a police vehicle is not automatically measuring every passing car.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a police car camera catch you speeding?

Police can enforce speeding from vehicles when they use suitable approved equipment and procedures. The presence of an in-car camera by itself does not show that a speed measurement was taken.

Do police dash cams record all the time?

Recording practice and equipment vary by force and vehicle. Footage may be retained according to operational need and force policy rather than kept indefinitely.

Can ordinary dash-cam footage prove speeding?

Video may provide context, timing and driving behaviour, but calculating speed reliably requires appropriate evidence and analysis. A dash cam is not automatically an approved speed meter.

What should I do after receiving a speeding notice?

Check the alleged offence, vehicle details, response deadline and instructions. Seek independent legal advice if you dispute the allegation or are unsure how to respond.
