TfL Approved Dash Cams: What Drivers Need to Know

TfL approval applies to specified CCTV systems used in licensed taxi and private-hire vehicles. Do not assume an ordinary consumer dash cam is approved for cabin recording.

A ‘TfL approved dash cam’ is not simply any camera sold for a car. Transport for London publishes requirements and an approved list for CCTV systems fitted to licensed taxis and private-hire vehicles. That matters especially when a camera records passengers or audio. A conventional forward-facing incident camera and an in-cabin CCTV system are not automatically treated alike.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Does TfL approve ordinary dash cams?

TfL publishes approved CCTV systems for licensed taxi and private-hire use. A retail dash cam should not be described as approved unless the exact system appears in TfL's current material.

Can a private-hire driver use a forward-facing dash cam?

Rules depend on what the camera captures and how it is installed. Check TfL's latest licensing guidance before fitting it, particularly if passengers or audio could be recorded.

Is an interior camera the same as a road-facing dash cam?

No. An interior camera records a much more privacy-sensitive space and may fall within CCTV requirements that do not apply in the same way to a road-only view.

How do I check whether a camera system is TfL approved?

Use the current approved-systems list on TfL's official website and match the supplier, system and installer details exactly. Ask TfL or your licensing authority if anything is unclear.
