Headlamp Ballast: What It Does and When to Replace It

A ballast regulates the electrical supply for a discharge headlamp. If a xenon lamp fails or flickers, establish whether the bulb, ballast or wiring is responsible before replacing parts.

A headlamp ballast is part of some vehicle discharge lighting systems; it is not the power pack of an outdoor head torch. Its role is to provide and regulate the electrical supply needed by the lamp. A xenon headlamp that will not start, cuts out or flickers may have a ballast fault, but the bulb, connector or vehicle wiring can produce similar symptoms.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What does a headlamp ballast do?

In a vehicle xenon or HID system, the ballast supplies and controls the electrical power used to start and operate the discharge lamp. It is distinct from a battery pack in a head torch.

How do I know if my headlamp ballast has failed?

Intermittent starting, flickering or a lamp that goes out can point to a ballast problem, but a worn bulb, poor connection or wiring fault may look similar. Proper diagnosis is needed before replacing a component.

Can I replace a xenon ballast myself?

Xenon lighting uses high voltage and can be hazardous. Have the system inspected and repaired by a suitably qualified technician, following the vehicle maker’s service procedure.

Are headlamp ballasts interchangeable between cars?

No general interchange can be assumed. Check the vehicle application, lamp system, connector and part number against reliable fitment information.
