Using a Food Thermometer Correctly

Insert a clean probe into the thickest part, wait for a stable reading and check more than one spot when the food is uneven.

Using a food thermometer well is more than reading the display. The sensor must reach the coolest part of the food, stay clear of bone or the cooking surface and remain in place until its reading settles. Clean the probe before and after it touches food.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

How do you use a food thermometer correctly?

Clean the probe, insert its sensing area into the thickest part, avoid bone and wait for a stable reading. Compare it with current guidance for that food.

Do you put a meat thermometer in before cooking?

Insert it before cooking only when the thermometer and probe are explicitly rated for leave-in use. Use instant-read models for checks outside the oven.

How far should a thermometer go into food?

The sensing section must be fully surrounded by food at the centre. Its location differs by model, so consult the instructions; thin foods are often easier to measure from the side.

Should you clean a food thermometer between readings?

Yes. Clean it after every use and between raw and cooked food to reduce cross-contamination, following the maker's care instructions.
