A Wi-Fi extender can improve the connection in a weak-coverage area; it cannot raise the broadband speed reaching your router. Placement and the link back to the router matter.

A booster can improve the Wi-Fi connection in an area with weak reception, but it does not increase the broadband speed reaching your router. The result depends on the incoming signal, placement and network traffic.
It may improve reception upstairs if it receives a sound signal from the router and is positioned between it and the room. If the broadband connection itself is slow, a booster cannot fix that underlying limit.
The extender may be too far from the router, crowded by interference, or relaying a weak connection. Test nearer the router, try another position and compare the device directly on the main network.
A wired access point can provide a more direct link when you can run Ethernet to the area. A wireless booster is easier to place, but performance depends on its radio connection back to the router.
