360 Degree Car Camera Systems Explained

A true surround-view system uses several cameras or a specialised panoramic lens. Check what “360 degree” means on each product before assuming it records every side.

A 360 degree car camera system can describe three quite different products: a multi-camera driving recorder, a panoramic cabin camera or a low-speed surround-view parking kit. The label alone does not prove that every side of the car is continuously recorded.

Questions before you buy

Does a 360 degree car camera record all around the vehicle?

Only if its camera layout and recording system cover those views. Some products use “360” for a rotatable lens or cabin panorama rather than four-sided exterior recording.

Is a surround-view parking camera the same as a dash cam?

No. A parking camera mainly supplies a live low-speed view, while a dash cam records footage. Some integrated systems do both, but the specification must say so.

How many cameras are needed for a bird's-eye car view?

Aftermarket bird's-eye systems commonly use front, rear and two side cameras, plus processing and calibration. The exact arrangement depends on the kit.

Can a 360 camera system work while the car is parked?

Some systems offer parking recording when correctly powered and configured. Coverage, trigger method and battery protection vary, so check the manual and hardwire requirements.
