Dashcam Viewers: How to Open, Review and Export Footage

Start with the camera maker's supported player when you need GPS or multi-channel synchronisation. A standard media player may be enough for the video alone.

A dashcam viewer lets you inspect saved clips and, with compatible files, align video with GPS, speed or G-sensor data. Manufacturer software is usually the safest starting point because proprietary metadata and paired front-and-rear files are not always understood by generic players.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

How do I view dashcam footage on a computer?

Remove the memory card or connect the camera as instructed, copy the files, then open them in the manufacturer's desktop player or a compatible media player.

Why is my dashcam video split into short files?

Loop recording saves consecutive clips so older unprotected footage can be overwritten efficiently. A compatible viewer may play them in order.

Can a dashcam viewer show GPS and speed?

Yes, if the camera recorded that metadata and the viewer supports its file format. Video-only models cannot add missing GPS data afterwards.

Should I edit dashcam footage before sending it to an insurer?

Keep the original files unchanged. Send or export a copy in the format requested, preserving the original card and metadata where practical.
