Digital Meat Thermometer Guns: Uses and Limitations

A digital thermometer gun is useful for griddles, pizza stones, oil surfaces and refrigeration checks. It cannot confirm that poultry, burgers or a joint are safely cooked inside.

A digital meat thermometer gun is an infrared instrument that estimates surface temperature from a distance. Point it at a pan, griddle, pizza stone or chilled display to identify hot and cold areas without contact. A digital food thermometer gun does not see through meat, so it cannot tell you the temperature at the centre.

How to Use a Digital Meat Thermometer Correctly

How to Use a Digital Meat Thermometer Correctly

Insert the sensing tip into the thermal centre of the food, avoiding bone, trays and hot fat pockets. Wait for a stable reading and check a second location before deciding the food is ready.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can you use an infrared thermometer on meat?

You can measure the surface, but not the internal temperature. Use a penetration probe to confirm the centre is cooked safely.

What does distance-to-spot ratio mean?

It describes the diameter of the measured area at a given distance. Move closer when you need to isolate a small target.

Why does a thermometer gun read shiny metal incorrectly?

Infrared readings depend on emissivity, and reflective metal can reflect surrounding heat. Consult the manual or measure a suitable non-reflective surface.

Is a laser thermometer the same as an infrared thermometer?

The infrared sensor makes the measurement; the laser is only an aiming aid. The measured spot is usually larger than the laser dot.
