Choosing and Using a Turkey Crown Meat Thermometer

A thin instant-read or leave-in probe works well for a turkey crown. Insert it into the thickest breast meat, avoid bone and verify the result in more than one place.

A turkey crown meat thermometer helps you measure the breast centre rather than guessing from skin colour or cooking time alone. Insert the sensing area from the side or top into the thickest meat, keeping it clear of the breastbone and roasting tin.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Where do you put a thermometer in a turkey crown?

Place the sensing area in the thickest part of the breast, away from bone, the cavity and the tray. Check both sides if the crown is uneven.

Can I leave the probe in a turkey crown while it cooks?

Yes, when the probe, cable and any exposed components are rated for the oven conditions. An ordinary instant-read unit should be removed after each check.

Why check more than one place in a turkey crown?

Thickness and oven heat vary, so one point may be warmer than another. Base the decision on the coolest correctly placed stable reading.

Should the thermometer touch the breastbone?

No. Bone can give a reading that does not represent the centre of the meat, so reposition the sensor into flesh.
