Front Dash Cams for Cars: What to Compare

A front-only camera is the cleanest route to recording the road ahead. Prioritise reliable loop recording, clear moving detail and a mount that does not obstruct your view.

A dash cam front setup records the road ahead without the extra wiring of a rear camera. This makes a front dash cam a sensible choice for straightforward evidence, rental-car use or drivers who want the least intrusive installation.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Is a front dash cam enough?

It covers the direction where many incidents unfold and is the simplest setup. It cannot show a rear impact or activity behind the vehicle, so choose two channels if that evidence matters.

What field of view should a front car camera have?

A moderate wide angle captures adjacent lanes without shrinking distant objects excessively. Compare real footage because quoted angle alone does not describe edge distortion or detail.

Where should a front dash camera be mounted?

Mount it high on the windscreen, normally near the rear-view mirror, within the wiper sweep and outside the driver's critical view. Do not block vehicle sensors.

Can I add a rear camera later?

Only if the front unit supports the manufacturer's compatible rear module. Many front-only cameras cannot be converted, so check before buying.
