How to Mount a Dash Cam Safely

Dry-fit the camera before exposing any adhesive. The final mount should hold firmly, keep the lens in a wiped area and leave the driver's view and airbag paths clear.

How to Mount a Dash Cam Safely
01

Choose the position before attaching anything

Sit in the driver's seat, hold the assembled camera high on the windscreen and confirm it does not obstruct the view. Make sure the lens looks through an area swept by the wipers.

02

Check the mount and vehicle instructions

Identify whether the camera uses adhesive, suction or a static film. Check the vehicle manual for sensor zones, airbags and trim that should not be disturbed.

03

Prepare the windscreen

Clean and dry the small mounting area using the method allowed by the mount maker. A greasy, cold or damp surface can weaken adhesion.

04

Attach and hold the mount

Align it once, apply even pressure for the stated period and allow the adhesive to settle before loading it if the instructions require this. Do not repeatedly peel and restick a single-use pad.

05

Aim the camera using live view

Show enough road to preserve context without wasting most of the frame on sky or bonnet. Tighten the joint and check that doors, mirror adjustment and sun visors do not strike it.

06

Route and secure the cable

Use the supplied route and clips, keeping clear of pedals, steering, airbags and sharp edges. For hardwiring or complex trim, use a competent installer.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

How do you mount a dash cam without suction cups?

Use the manufacturer-supplied adhesive mount or approved static film on clean glass. Avoid improvised tapes that may release in heat.

Can I mount a dash cam on the dashboard?

Only if the mount is designed for that surface and the lens retains a clear view without creating an obstruction. Windscreen mounting is more common.

Can a phone dashcam mount replace a real dash cam?

A secure phone mount may hold a recording phone, but phones can overheat, interrupt recording and lack automatic loop and incident functions. It is not the same system.

How long should dash cam adhesive set?

Follow the pad manufacturer's instructions because timing and temperature limits vary. Support the mount until the bond is ready.
