Best Infrared Meat Thermometers for Cooking in the UK

ThermoWorks Thermapen IR is the strongest all-rounder because it combines a surface scanner with a penetration probe. INKBIRD IHT-1M is another two-in-one option; Etekcity models suit surface-only checks.

Quick answer

Choose ThermoWorks Thermapen IR when you want surface scanning and internal-food checks in one instrument. INKBIRD IHT-1M adds a timer and presets. Etekcity Lasergrip 630 offers adjustable emissivity and a longer distance ratio for surface work, while the simpler 774 suits occasional pan and griddle checks.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can an infrared thermometer tell whether meat is cooked?

Not by itself. Infrared reads the surface; use a penetration probe to measure the centre of meat.

What does distance-to-spot ratio mean?

It describes how the measured area grows with distance. A 12:1 instrument measures roughly a one-unit-wide spot from twelve units away, subject to the maker's optical specification.

Why does shiny metal give odd infrared readings?

Reflective, low-emissivity surfaces can mislead an IR sensor. Follow the device guidance and adjust emissivity only when you understand the target material.

Can I use an infrared cooking thermometer on oil?

It can scan the surface, but it may not represent temperature deeper in the oil. A suitable immersion probe is better when the bulk liquid temperature matters.
