How to Use a Router as a WiFi Extender

A spare router can extend coverage when its firmware supports a suitable mode. A wired access point is usually the more predictable arrangement; wireless repeating depends on compatible hardware and software.

To use a router as a WiFi extender, first find out whether it supports access point, repeater, bridge or mesh mode. These modes are not interchangeable: an access point normally uses an Ethernet cable back to the main router, while a wireless repeater must receive and relay the existing WiFi signal. The right choice depends on the spare router’s firmware and your home layout.

Questions before you buy

Can I use a WiFi router as an extender?

Sometimes. The router needs a supported repeater, bridge or mesh mode for wireless use, or access point mode when connected to the main router by Ethernet. Check the exact model manual.

Can I use a WiFi extender as a router?

Only if that model provides router mode and the network connection required for it. Many extenders are designed to extend an existing network or act as wired access points, not replace a router.

Is a WiFi access point better than a range extender?

A wired access point avoids using WiFi for the link back to the router and can provide a more reliable connection where you can run Ethernet. A range extender is easier where cabling is impractical, but its placement and wireless backhaul affect performance.

Can I connect two routers wirelessly to extend WiFi?

Only if the router models and firmware support a compatible wireless bridge, repeater or mesh configuration. Otherwise, connect the second router by Ethernet and configure it as an access point if its manual permits.
